Timing is Everything

After weeks of serious research and groundbreaking experiments I can finally reveal I have invented my very own time machine. By day I may be a humble writer but by night I am Lady Time herself. For the last time I peeked over the desk it was August and now Mr November is heading this way.

Tick, Tock, er Tap?

But before I go all H G Wells I better explain. The secret of time has nothing to do with tick tocks but taps. Battering out keys on the computer soaks up a lot of time and once you start it can be hard to stop (a bit like a packet of Pringles). However, having a plan and being organised is just as important. There’s no sense tackling any writing project if you have no idea what you’re working towards. That’s when large chunks of time will evaporate into thin air without any rewards at all.

Have a plan, Stan

If you need to get the little grey cells working on a writing project, the first thing you need to do is think about what you want to achieve. Then write it down and stick it somewhere very prominent – it’s your ultimate goal.

Then set a deadline

…and stick to it.

Deadlines are there for a reason. Take them seriously and you’re halfway there. Schedule in some serious editing time and make sure someone else casts their beady eye over your work – just to pick up any niggly mistakes you may be missing.

Rejoin The living

But every now and again make sure you emerge from your writing den and take a break. Blink, rub your eyes – have a cuppa and a biscuit. Remember that nobody can survive on all work and no play.
