Developing Your Writing Voice

Writing has so many different meanings.

For some it’s purely functional. A means to an end, where all that really matters are the facts and figures. Others take a more arty approach. Appreciating the words used and the way the writer uses them. Funny thing is though, is that writing tends to be shrouded in mystery. Penning a letter may not be hard but ask someone to write a blog post or put together a news article and suddenly it’s quite literary a different story.

‘Writing you say, well how do you go about that?’

There are lots of companies out there who have online blogs but just don’t know what to do with them. They panic about content, about having the right angle but most of all about  the impression they will make. Now I’m the first to say you should always think twice before you publish anything on your business blog. But there comes a point where procrastination is just as damaging as no blog post at all. A blog is a great way to interact with your customers, potential clients and fans of your business. Write nothing and they will be none the wiser. They’ll be left in the dark, thinking ‘What’s the point of having a voice if you  don’t use it?’

Find your writing voice and experiment with it. Personality is what makes a blog and will help your company stand out from the competition. People don’t want to hear about the ‘official’ you. It’s the men and women behind the corporate company image who really speak to your readers. So exercise your inner writer and practise what you want to say. Don’t think it through too much. Tortured writers are ten-a-penny and brooding over high-brow phrases just isn’t good for your health.

Have fun, write about what you’re passionate about but most importantly be yourself!
